#Effective leadership

I recently had the displeasure of being subjected to the pre flight security at Terminal 5.  On the best occasions this is not fun, but a necessity.  On average I travel through an airport approximately every six weeks.  Not a lot some might say?  Irrelevant of how you perceive the frequency, this last experience got me thinking about the role of personnel responsible for pre flight security screening.

Female Leadership

On the 8th March to celebrate International Women’s day perhaps it is appropriate give credit to the many female Heads of State, CEO’s, Owners and Mothers.   How interesting that the world has a strong representation of female leaders, 22 countries in total including  Denmark, Poland, Bangladesh, Lithuania, Brazil and Norway.   This is quite a sizeable representation of women in top leadership positions, some in countries that are culturally showing more masculine than feminine qualities.

Female Leaders

Sports and leadership have so much in common, as do leadership and sports?

Kirsti Yamaguchi could not have put the point across more succinctly.  To be successful in any sports, whether on ice, on snow, in water, on a track or field, focus is required to keep your goal in mind, and in vision at all times.  Sport is a passion as is effective leadership.  The “why” in Why I do this?

Setting clear and measurable goals is essential for individual sports men and women as well as for teams.  Is this different for any leader?  He or she needs to know and be passionate about the goal and be able to inspire others to share that same passion.

Leadership - The Laws of Persuasion

In Robert Cialdini’s Influence: Science and Practice (2009), he describes the powerful rule of reciprocity as one of “the most influential dynamics of human behaviour, the reciprocation rule essentially states that if someone gives something to us, we feel obligated to repay that debt.”

Reciprocation, “the quality or state of being reciprocal: mutual dependence, action, or influence.” (Merriam-Webster dictionary)  “To be reciprocal it is something that is given, felt, or done in return, (of an agreement or obligation) bearing on or binding each of the two parties equally.” (Collins English Dictionary)

The importance of inner balance in effective leadership

At this time of year many of us try to be the archetypal model of a swan, gracefully gliding over the surface whilst paddling like fury under the water line trying to get everything done both in the work environment and at home!  I can relate to this, especially with so many events that come one after another.

According to the National Sleep Foundation “more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month - with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more”.

The impact of poor management decisions on customer loyalty

Continuing the airline theme by taking a look at our own national airline in terms of the company motto and how poor decisions within the organisation affect customer loyalty.  As seen on the Ba.com website:

“At British Airways our promise of ‘To Fly. To Serve’ embodies who we are and what we do. We want to ensure our promise extends beyond our everyday operation and that our commitment is one that lasts. To do that we have one overarching goal: Responsible Flying.”

Customer service and staff development and training

EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT - A COST OR AN INVESTMENT?

I was recently staying in a hotel on the Salford Quays.  For purposes of my blog I will only say that it is a well known international brand.  Not a huge hotel, and therefore potentially able to give guests a more personal experience.   There was nothing particularly different about this hotel – the décor rather minimalistic, fresh and clean looking, but the rest was the same, as any other hotel brand.

Effective Leadership and Openness

Can someone tell me what happened to debate?  Is the current state of lack of initiating, wanting and allowing debate a result of the mobile phone and its many apps, twitters, instagrams and the like, or is it the fear of being politically incorrect and the consequences of that?

The benefit of free speech is based on individual liberal values and the ability to debate what you hear in an open manner without the fear of being berated, chased off or blocked by the very institution where you are signed up to deliver ideas, thoughts and opinions that might be different to the audience’s own, because they are not willing to expand their minds through open debate.
